Design for a better life

ABOUT JERRYBAG
JERRYBAG is a social enterprise established in Kampala, Uganda in 2014. We have designed jerrycan bags for Children in Africa who have to carry a heavy water bottle called Jerrycan, a yellow thin plastic water tank. Jerrycan is very heavy so a child can face a risk of car accidents.
That is why we started a sewing studio and making Jerrycan bags for supporting the children in Uganda. We are currently working with 14 local women tailors producing Jerrycan bags.
How we work

In Africa, children typically use 10kg jerrycans to transport water, facing extreme challenges while walking without any assistance over an average distance of 6km (3.7mi) per day. Some children even spend more than two hours going to the well, making it hard for them to attend school.
In fact, there are usually no paved sidewalks for pedestrians, forcing them to share the roads with cars. This situation is dangerous, since the drivers cannot easily find small children and the children cannot react quickly due to the Jerrycans on their heads which block their full visibility. Additionally, car crashes in Africa are 30% deadlier than the international average.

We established a sustainable design company in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda in 2014 with the goal of providing safe-walking solutions for African children. We produce more than 400 Jerrycan bags every month for primary-school-age children to carry jerrycans easily. With the help of 14 Ugandan women tailors so far, we have delivered the Jerrycan bags to children in rural Uganda through NGOs.
